GroupType

For information about the use of special characters, see Special characters.

The GroupType creates the set to put the service points in when using the GroupName/GroupId attribute. For example, you could create a group using GroupType = House Colors and then GroupName/GroupId = Red. Every service point that has GroupName/GroupId = Red, and GroupType = House Colors is placed in the Red group as a subset of the group House Colors. If you also had houses that are blue, you would use the GroupName/GroupId = Blue and the GroupType would still be House Colors. A similar example would be GroupType = Postal Codes with GroupNames/GroupIds that were the actual ZIP codes.

Use this attribute to associate the GroupName/GroupId with an existing GroupType or to create a new GroupType. If the GroupType value in the import file matches an existing GroupType, then the new GroupName/GroupId is assigned to the existing GroupType. If the GroupType value in the import file does not match an existing GroupType, then a new GroupType is created.

For example, a Configuration file contains the following assignments:

GroupId = "01-0125"

GroupType = "Route"

GroupName = "01-0125"

UniqueMembership = "true"

When this file is imported, ChoiceConnect Fixed Network creates a group called 01-0125 and Itron Analytics creates a group type called Route with a sub group called 01-0125.

Some group types are used only for specific use cases. For example, District is typically used only for district metering.

GroupNames/GroupIds must be unique within a GroupType.

Use

Collection Manager

Required. Sectors are defined within the GroupType attribute. The sector name uses the ServicePointGroup GroupName, if defined. Otherwise, the sector name uses the ServicePointGroup GroupId. The sector's expected meter count is updated automatically and reflects the total number of service points assigned to the sector.

Do not assign installed endpoints to a sector named "unknown." This sector name is reserved for endpoints that do not have location data (endpoints that have not been installed yet).

Note: The GroupType attribute (when defining sectors) can be used to differentiate device types in the system and to associate locations. This allows for analysis of read rates and non-comm reporting in the KPI drill downs for device type-specific reporting.

Itron Analytics

Required. GroupType is required if you are creating groups in Analytics in conjunction with the GroupName attribute. Some group types within Analytics are automatically created based on the type of attribute, such as City, State, Postal Code, Region, District, Pressure Zone, Meter Size and Route. Groups that exist by default in Itron Analytics are known as Unique Groups, meaning that a service point can only exist in one of the sub groups below the GroupType. As an example, a service point can only be in one Postal Code at a time. If the Postal Code changes, the system will automatically remove it from the old Postal Code and add it to the new Postal Code in your MDI Configuration file. When you create your own groups, there is an attribute called UniqueMembership that can be set. In the example above for the house colors, you might want to use the UniqueMembership attribute so that the service point can only belong to either the red or the blue house color, but not in both. This helps keep your group data clean.

ChoiceConnect Fixed Network

Required. In ChoiceConnect Fixed Network and Itron Analytics, groups must be consistent across the Network Administration Application (NAA), the Network performance Application (NPA), and Itron Analytics. In the MDI configuration file, always set the GroupType value to Route. Route is the only GroupType that is common across NAA, NPA, and Itron Analytics.
